International Day of Action

TWO YEARS TOO MANY!

Friday, 18 January 2008, 11 am

Gather at Phillip's Square (corner of Ste-Catherine and Place Phillips) Part of an INTERNATIONAL DAY of ACTION in support of Kader.

On 1 January 2006, almost two years ago, Abelkader Belaouni, or Kader, a non-status Algerian man, took refuge in St. Gabriel's church in Montreal to avoid deportation from Canada. Despite an outpouring of support, he has remained a prisoner in the church ever since, unable to leave for fear of being arrested and deported. That's two years too many!

Join us this January 2008 to send a loud, clear message to the Canadian Immigration Minister to Act NOW to regularize the status of Abdelkader Belaouni.

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

On Saturday, May 13, a special community dinner was held in Kader's honour at St-Gabriel's church. Over 200 people from Point St-Charles and beyond attended, and a lovely evening was enjoyed by all. Many guests made speeches in support of Kader, including Jean Lalande of the Welfare Rights Committee, Thierry St-Cyr of the Bloc Quebecois, Matthew McLaughlin of the NDP, and Marcella Vega, a Colombian refugee who spent over one year in sanctuary in Montreal. Everyone was treated to wonderful food, live jazz and Mahgreb music, and we all celebrated Kader's birthday! Many in attendance also signed petitions and letters to MP's. Kader and his support committee would like to thank St-Gabriel's church, all the volunteers who sent out invitations, cooked, and cleaned, and everyone who came out.
